I think you left something out. On step #3, substeps 2 and 3, I assume one should REMOVE themself (or administrator) from ANY access to the SVI folder.

Please update for clarity.

step 3) above, there is not EDIT tile but rather a CHANGE PERMISSIONS one.

It seems when you check the "replace all existing inheritable..." when you come back in (after click OK on any popup, full OK'ing any prior applet window you see), that checkmark will be no longer checked (i.e. it doesn't stick). I assume this original check drove the ACL rebuild process and it now no longer needs to be checked.

Semi-lifesaver as I monkeyed with my SVI folder last night trying to learn about Windows System Image and plowed my way in just to be able to do a "dir" command in DOS. I wasn't even searching for this specifically, but it has just come into play.

you, sir, are a genius. very many thanks, and i sicerely hope others including M1cr0s0ft find this helpful information. may i add, that when i opened the sysvolinf i found that system still had full permissions but i actually needed to add my own user and assign full control to effect same result as per your guidance. very many thanks again, merry christmas and a happy and prosperous new year. lots of love.

Hi Richard,

Normally, that shouldn't be necessary, but it is good to know that in certain cases it helps to also include inheritable permissions. What happens then is that permissions that are not available on the children at all, are now copied to them. This is not always desirable, but I'm glad it works for your situation.

Effectively I remenber to have changed the permission of the files on the C: drive.(I am not an expert and I did this for all the files on C: because I was sick for the access denied for my files in the User folder)
I followed your procedure but without succes: I received a lot of access denied errors, and I repeatedly click Continue but I received also one other error message : "... not able to save the permission rights- access denied" (of somethink alike because I didn't noted the message)
then I did your procedure one more time but I also checked the box "Include inheritable permission from this object's parents" and this time I was successfull, I can now launch the backup program.
